Inspiring the Next Generation to Tackle Microplastic Pollution

On the occasion of World Environment Day, 5^th of June 2026, Naturbeads CEO Giovanna Laudisio, had the pleasure of participating in an event dedicated to one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time: microplastic pollution. The event, organised by the Lions Club Principessa Sichelgaita, brought together scientists, educators, students and members of the local community to discuss the impact of microplastics and the actions we can take to address this growing global issue.

As CEO of Naturbeads, Giovanna spoke about the urgent need to replace intentionally added microplastics with sustainable alternatives and shared how innovation can play a crucial role in protecting our environment. While regulations are helping to drive change, lasting progress also depends on education, collaboration and inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators.

One of the initiatives Naturbeads is particularly proud of is the educational project launched in 2025 with the Liceo Francesco Severi of Salerno, under the leadership of School Principal Prof. Barbara Figliolia. The project was created to give students first-hand experience of environmental research and to help them understand the real-world consequences of plastic pollution.

This year, under the guidance of Prof. Maria Giovanna Cantalupo and Prof. Anna Ferraiolo, the students collected samples from both marine and terrestrial environments to investigate the presence of microplastics. We loved the title of their presentation: The plastic hunter!

The samples were then analysed in collaboration with Prof. Maria Rosa Acocella at the University of Salerno, allowing students to experience every stage of the scientific process—from field sampling to laboratory analysis and interpretation of results.

Seeing the enthusiasm, curiosity and commitment of these young people has been incredibly inspiring. They are not only learning about one of today's most significant environmental challenges, but they are also developing the scientific skills and critical thinking that will enable them to become tomorrow's problem solvers.

We thank the Lions Club Principessa Sichelgaita, and in particular the president, Ing. Rosaria Chechile, for organising such an important event and for creating a platform to raise awareness about microplastic pollution.

Addressing microplastic pollution requires more than technological innovation—it requires collaboration across industry, academia, schools and local communities. By working together and investing in education, we can empower the next generation to build a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future.
